LAS VEGAS (Aug. 9, 2021) – Devin Vassell scored a team-high 23 points and Tre Jones made his summer league debut with 16 points and 8 assists but the Spurs fell to the Timberwolves by a final score of 89-91 in their first game of the 2021 MGM Resorts Summer League in Las Vegas.
After a back and forth first quarter where the Spurs trailed by a deuce, the Timberwolves used a 11-0 run to lead 49-38 at halftime. Jones scored 12 of his 16 points in the third quarter to help San Antonio cut the lead to three at the end of the third, 67-64. Vassell scored 15 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, including a three-pointer with 44 seconds left to tie the game, but Nathan Knight’s putback with 15 seconds left proved to be the go-ahead field goal to give the Timberwolves the win.
Minnesota was paced by Jaylen Nowell who recorded a game-high 24 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
