A Play-In Tournament Refresher

As the San Antonio Spurs wrap up the regular season this weekend, they know they are in the play-in tournament and will face the Pelicans next Wednesday, likely in New Orleans.

I have seen several tweets the last couple of days that tell me many aren’t exactly sure how the play in works – a win over the Pels does not get the Spurs a matchup with the Suns.

There are 3 games in the Play-In. The 7-8 seeds play and the 9-10 seeds play. The winner of the 7-8 game is the seventh seed in the playoffs and the loser of that game plays the winner of the 9-10 matchup for the eighth seed. The loser of the 9-10 is eliminated.

The Spurs-Pelicans game will be on ESPN next Wednesday with a tip at 8:30p – yes the Spurs get a national TV game. The winner of that game will play again April 15 on TNT.

As for the Spurs, they play their regular season home finale Saturday night against Golden State in what is Fan Appreciation Night. They will also recognize the legendary Red McCombs. The Spurs close the regular season on Sunday at Dallas.
