How good will UTSA be this season?

The Bible has arrived!

When Dave Campbell’s Texas Football shows up, you know football season is right around the corner. It’s the one magazine that I still look forward to every year and then the deep dive as I devour the content, making notes and bending the pages I will need to reference when the high school football season starts.

With Jeff Traylor on the cover, lots of UTSA love in this year’s edition – and it is well earned publicity for what the Roadrunners have accomplished since Traylor took over the program.

In the magazines State of Texas Power Poll UTSA is ranked 4th among the 12 FBS programs in the Lone Star State – 4th – right between the Aggies and Longhorns. Houston is No. 1, followed by Baylor and Texas A&M with the Longhorns at No. 5.

Despite a brutal three games to start the season, the magazine is predicting the Roadrunners to win the Conference USA Championship. In fact, 12 of the 13 in the writers’ poll listed in DCTF has UTSA repeating as C-USA Champs.

While I think the Roadrunners will start 0-3, the magazine has them starting 1-2 predicting a win over Army sandwiched between losses to Houston and Texas before going 7-1 in conference play. DCTF predicts a 9-3 overall record for UTSA and 7-1 in conference with the lone conference loss at UAB. The magazine predicted UTSA will close out the season with a trip to the Frisco Bowl against Utah State.

While I wish a better bowl game was at stake, I don’t disagree much with the magazine. It will be a tough start for UTSA. I think 0-3 but we know Coach Traylor can motivate his guys for conference play despite a tough start. He won’t let the non-conference schedule derail the season, especially with the talent he has coming back that learned how to win last year.

I love when Dave Campbell’s Texas Football shows up. For every high school player and coach, the reaction is the same – flip to your page and see if your name is in it. What did they write about your team. Plenty of San Antonio area players get good ink in this year’s magazine but I won’t write about that here – I will in the coming days use this space to let you know what the magazine predicts for the Longhorns, Aggies, Big 12 and SEC. And of course we will be talking about it on The Blitz from 4-7p.
