Longshot to make the Cowboys? Not so Fast

When I saw the Cowboys added an undrafted free agent wide receiver from a small directional school that was from San Antonio, I figured he was just a training camp body and an extreme longshot to make the team.

I was wrong.

Dennis Houston from Warren High School has a real shot to make this Dallas Cowboys team. During an appearance on The Blitz, Stephen Jones said “This guy has an opportunity here. He is doing everything the right way and making plays and one of the most important things is to have No. 4 like you and he certainly got his attention.”

And No. 4 does like him. “From day one he has done everything the right way. If you just watched him around the building and watched the way he practiced and nobody told you he was an undrafted rookie you wouldn’t think that by any means,” Quarterback Dak Prescott said on The Blitz.

I played those two clips for Dennis Houston on Wednesday when he joined Joe Reinagel and myself. I expected him to grin ear-to-ear hearing Dak and Stephen talk about him. He did not. His facial expression didn’t change much.

With injuries at wide receiver, Houston was able to get first-team reps during minicamps and OTA’s and he is getting first-team reps here in Oxnard over drafted rookie receivers and a couple of receivers that have been here.

The Warren grad said he just has to continue to work. And he will. He has that underdog mentality. The 2017 San Antonio High School All-Star Football Game alum went to Houston Baptist out of high school then played a year at Fullerton College before finishing at Western Illinois.

He has already caught the eye of the team. Cowboys radio sideline reporter Kristi Scales said on the way to Oxnard she asked three scouts about which young player she should keep an eye on for the content she needs and all of them said Dennis Houston.

Will he make the team? Will the Cowboys add a veteran wide receiver? Who knows but after hearing so much positive about Dennis Houston, while it’s always a numbers game, I would be surprised if he at least didn’t make the practice squad. He certainly is more than just a training camp body.
