Officer, suspect wounded in shooting at NW San Antonio apartment complex

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — A San Antonio police officer has been shot by a teen he was chasing in the city’s Northwest Side.
Chief William McManus says the officer started pursuing the driver of a vehicle with stolen tags around 1:30 Tuesday morning. During the chase, the driver crashed through the gate of the Chroma Apartments on Hamilton Wolfe, got out of the car and started running with officer Drew Matthewson in pursuit.
“He fled on foot down the outside corridor and hid behind the wall as the officer was in pursuit. As soon as the officer reached that corridor, the suspect fired at him,” said McManus.
The chief says Matthewson was shot in the shoulder, but he managed to return fire, shooting the suspect at least twice. Both were taken to a hospital. At last check, Matthewson was in stable condition and the suspect was in critical condition.
The officer, who has been in the San Antonio Police Department for one year, is on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
“The officer did a fantastic job in capturing the suspect,” said McManus.
