The Spurs are receiving Chandler Hutchinson as part of a five-team trade
The San Antonio Spurs aren’t done with free agency yet. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Spurs are receiving 6’7” forward Chandler Hutchinson from the Washington Wizards, as well as a 2022 second round pick, as part of a five-team trade in which the ultimate goal is a sign-and-trade that will get Spencer Dinwiddie of the Brooklyn Nets to the Wizards.
The other teams involved in trade are the Lakers and Indiana Pacers, who reportedly will receive draft-night trades from the Wizards. (There are likely some other moving parts in there that have yet to be reported, but we know what the Spurs are getting.)
Hutchinson was drafted 22nd overall out of Boise State by the Chicago Bulls in 2018 before being traded to the Wizards during this last season. For his career he has averaged 5.7 points and 3.2 rebounds on 44.1% shooting (30.9% from three) in 97 games.
It’s hard to know if he will be wearing the Silver and Black next season since they would have 17 players under contract if everyone signed today without make any other moves, which is over the league limit of 15 players (not counting two-ways). Only Drew Eubanks has a partially guaranteed contract, so someone else would either have to be moved or waived to get them back to 15. (They can also sign two two-way players to push the roster total to 17. Second round pick Joe Wieskamp is looking more like a likely candidate for a two-way than guaranteed contract at this point based on the current roster construction.)
Clearly the Spurs aren’t done making moves, so stay tuned. And if anyone needs help keeping track of all the current Spurs (assuming everyone sticks to their agreements before August 6), here you go. (Note: * = contract agreed to but not signed. Also this does not include Kieta Bates Diop, who received a qualifying offer from the Spurs, which they have until August 13 to resend).
