Top Gun: Maverick is good, but Academy Award??

I finally had the chance to see the movie that everyone is talking about, Top Gun Maverick. Tom Cruise reprises his role as Maverick, an aging Naval Aviator who gets one last shot at glory. Going into the movie I had nothing but high expectations because no one had said anything negative, in fact it was hailed as Academy award worthy by some.

Let me say that I like Tom Cruise and I appreciate that he wanted this movie to be seen in the theatre and it should be. There are a few scenes that will have you on the edge of your seat. But is it as good as the original? I say not quite. It is hard to make a sequel that lives up the first and while this one is close, it comes up just short. In fact I felt the first 30 minutes were rather slow. It picks up dramatically after that and even has the shirts off sports scene of the first Top Gun. I’m sure some folks enjoyed that but I thought it was a cheap rip off from the first .
I’m not here to trash this movie, in fact I recommend it highly, the final mission is fantastic! It is hard to replicate the bond that Goose and Maverick share in the first one, not to mention the rivalry between Iceman and Maverick. So while I enjoyed the film, I would say it might be a little overhyped.
