Second Day in Pads at Dallas Cowboys Training Camp: McCarthy’s Intensity, Prescott’s Scrambles, and Dowdle’s Rise!

Today Tuesday is second day in pads for the Cowboys and day 2 of our Dallas Cowboys
Training Camp coverage from Oxnard.

A couple of thoughts on yesterday’s first day in pads…

While we have seen it before, seeing players with the guardian caps on is still kinda weird. You
miss the sound of helmets clashing – it is the sound of football – although we all understand the
reason.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy talked about it really being the first day of camp and you could tell
there was an extra level of intensity and excitement. Starting Running Back Tony Pollard talked
about that with us on The Blitz.

It is early in camp and the defense is ahead of the offense. That is typical this time of year but as
good as this defense is, it may stay that way. I have seen a lot of reporters tweeting about Dak
Prescott scrambling a lot. I like it – the defense is playing that well, but when something isn’t
there, he isn’t just throwing the ball away. I hope that means he will use his legs to keep plays
alive – and he is smart enough to slide when necessary. He knows here in Oxnard, he can run
where he wants and he won’t get hit.

Speaking of running, we had Pollard on The Blitz yesterday and while RB1 didn’t want to
speculate on who will be his backup, McCarthy said yesterday “I’m telling you, I am loving
Rico” in reference to Rico Dowdle, someone you have heard us talking about on The Blitz a lot
the past several weeks.

Dowdle has battled injuries the past two years but the Cowboys have kept him on the team for a
reason. McCarthy also praised the improvement of Malik Davis. Duece Vaughn actually looks
like he can be more than just a gadget player.

As for Ronald Jones, I have said many times I don’t expect him to make the opening day roster.
We all know now he won’t be around for the first two games after getting suspended for PED
use. Jones is expected to talk to the media today. We will update you on what he says on The
Blitz.
